Hyundai launches the NorCAL ZERO Project

Hyundai has announced a project which will use the company's hydrogen fuel cell technology to bring zero-emission freight transportation to the San Francisco Bay Area and California's Central Valley.
As part of the NorCAL ZERO Project, Hyundai is taking charge of what it claims to be the single largest deployment of Class 8 hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks. 30 Class 8 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks with a 6x5 drive axle configuration have now taken to the roads of California.
The XCIENT Fuel Cell electric truck, first launched in 2020, is the world's first mass-produced, heavy-duty truck powered by hydrogen. Since its launch, the XCIENT Fuel Cell has been deployed in eight countries: The U.S.A, Switzerland, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Korea, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Hyundai has also been in collaboration with key partners to build a comprehensive hydrogen mobility ecosystem across North America. This helps to ensure the successful deployment and operation of the hydrogen-powered trucks.
Last year, Hyundai supplied 30 units of XCIENT Fuel Cell electric trucks to G.E.T Freight Corp. Thanks to the leverage on the latter's logistics network and capabilities, the collaborative commercial operation between both parties continues to be in motion successfully.
The trucks can be fueled at FirstElement Fuel's hydrogen refueling station, designed to fuel up to 200 heavy-duty trucks per day. On top of this, Pape, a specialized truck service provider, provides vehicle maintenance and services at its facility in San Leandro, California.
Hyundai estimates that the the new NorCAL ZERO fleet has the potential to reduce approximately over 24,000 metric tons of carbon emissions as compared to diesel-powered vehicles. This creates a substantial positive impact on air quality in the region.
The Korean brand further states that the project not only marks a significant step forward in realising its vision for a global hydrogen society, but also acts as a demonstration as to how the transport energy transition is achievable today.
The dedication event for NorCAL ZERO, held at Oakland's FirstElement Fuel Hydrogen Refueling Station, was attended by Hyundai's partners, which provided grants to make this project happen.
